Make a Splash at the Raquette River Outfitters in Tupper Lake

posted by Admin User at 2023-04-29 21:05:00

Getting out on the water in a canoe, kayak or standup paddleboard is a summertime staple in the Adirondacks. Luckily, you don’t have to bring your own boat to do so—you can buy or rent one at a local outfitter. If you’re in the Tupper Lake area, that means stopping by Raquette River Outfitters, which is celebrating 40 years in business this summer.

Raquette River Outfitters started in 1983 as Raquette River Bike and Boat Company. By 1987, they decided to change their focus solely to paddling and opened ad outfitter and livery within the village of Tupper Lake; in 1992, they moved to their current location on State Route 30, just south of town and right by the water.

The shop’s central location is the gateway to a myriad of wilderness routes. The staff is passionate about the recreation opportunities in the Adirondacks, and love to share their local knowledge and love of the area with the public. They enjoy taking the time to plan trips with customers, poring over maps, looking at what the next adventure is, identifying wildlife and plants, discussing gear, and relishing in the reports of good times when customers come back happy and confident from their adventures.

Raquette River Outfitters offers canoe, kayak and standup paddleboard rentals, sales and test paddling, as well as a unique, authentic outfitting shop that has everything you need for your trip. In the winter season, the shop is transformed into an Adirondack guide boat building shop, and the workbench and antique tools are on display year-round.

Take a peek in the barn on the property and you’ll find examples of the antique boats themselves, including traditional Adirondack guide boats built in the 1880s and wood and canvas canoes. They also carry the essentials for those restoring these antique gems, as well as repair and restoration tools and kits for more modern boats. Part of the staff’s love of the area extends to keeping these wilderness routes pristine.

Each Father’s Day, they host a special River Clean Up event, providing boat rentals and garbage bags for those interested in helping clean up the local waterways. This year’s event is on Sunday, June 18, 2023. This year, there’s also a guided trip on the Raquette River being held the previous weekend, Saturday June 10. The 12-mile, 6-8 hour trip will be guided by Anne Fleck of Raquette River Outfitters and Chris Morris and Brandon Devito of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. The trip is free, but those looking to rent a boat to participate should contact Raquette River Outfitters for information first at (518) 359-3228. Other events take place throughout the season as well.

If you want to disconnect from your busy life and reconnect with nature, make sure to stop by Raquette River Outfitters this summer. They’ll help you choose the right route and gear, prepare your trip, build confidence in your paddling skills, connect with a passion for the outdoors, and explore the Adirondacks’ beautiful waterways. All you have to do is show up and give it a try!
