This winter celebration of film has grown from a humble film-lover’s weekend to a community-wide celebration of filmmaking. Held in historic downtown Watertown, NY, the Snowtown Film Festival is virtual this year and features films from throughout the world that emphasize winter and the “North Country spirit." Short films were selected from more than 565 submitted from over 64 countries and includes a special “Our Great Lakes Connection," created through a partnership with the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the Lake Ontario Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council and Thunder Bay International Film Festival. STFF will present five Great Lakes films accompanied by a live streaming panel discussion January 31 at 6:00pm.

Bare branches and fewer birds makes for the perfect time to learn the basics of birdwatching. We’ll grab binoculars and set out onto the preserve to hone our skills and discover how special winter bird watching really is. We will go for a short hike, please come dressed for the weather. Pre- registration is required and due to limited capacities associated with the pandemic, walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Daniel Schroeder (b. 1991) is a painter who lives and works near Albany, New York. He was awarded a full tuition scholarship to The Cooper Union, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2014. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, and his work is in private collections around the country, as well as in the collection of the Albany Institute of Art.

An artistic exploration of migration and transformation. Patti Weisser grew up in Washington County, NY and now resides in Vermont. She began studying art but switched to the healing arts to make a living. Her paintings are inspired by nature, with quiet, tranquil scenes which bring her great peace and healing, and which hopefully does the same for others. // Carlos Alegria was born and raised in Chile, where the arts were not promoted or valued. Even as a young boy he created art by any means possible despite materials, time and space being hard to come by. He is completely self-taught and his message through his work is for all people to be open to art, to “pick up a brush” and give it a try. His art is for all people, not for mastery. Visit the Botanical Gardens after dark for this magical experience. The Botanical Gardens and the plant collection will be highlighted with soft lighting to enhance the shapes, sizes, textures and colors all the plants and the larger than life glass conservatory. Visitors will enjoy this Enchanted Winter Escape as light bounces around, snowflakes dance through the dome, rocks glow through the desert and twinkling terrariums hang over head. Bring a friend, your family or a date to this wonderful tropical escape! // RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED for all visitors, including members, due to capacity limitations. Walk-ins may be turned away if capacity is surpassed.

Horsedrawn Sleighrides at Highland Park

Enjoy the fresh air and a 20-minute picturesque ride through the Highland Forest, which is also known as “The Adirondacks of Central New York.” Sleigh rides are available weekends in winter along with some holiday and weekday rides. All rides will take place weather permitting. The park recommends calling the office ahead of time to check on the schedule. Horses and sleighs are provided by Maple Hedge Farms. // Due to Covid-19, all rides are by prior RESERVATION ONLY. Masks are required.
