John Boyd Thacher State Park
The more than 25 additional miles of park trails provide summer hiking and mountain biking as well as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling
Thacher State Park is one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Featuring six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides an amazing panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains.
The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields, picnic areas and offers interpretive programs year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. The more than 25 additional miles ofpark trails provide summer hiking and mountain biking as well as winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The Lake Trail is a short, easy trail leading from the Nature Center to the lakeshore and is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
From September to October, enjoy the WildPlay Adventure Course with 15 zip lines, 60 aerial games, and a 40-foot jump.
The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is located two miles from the Overlook on Thompson's Lake and features exhibits, interactive displays, trails for hiking and skiing, and educational programs. The park also has a Bird Conservation Area and there are currently 171 species of birds that have been identified within the J.B. Thacher and Thompson's Lake BCA, of which 102 are confirmed or probable breeders.
The park also has both private wooded sites and open sites for camping that can accommodate tents and RVs.
Household pets only are allowed; caged or on a leash not more than 6 feet, rabies vaccination and proof of same required. Not permitted in buildings or bathing areas.
