Clermont State Historic Site
Originally built around 1740, Clermont Mansion was rebuilt during the Revolution by Martha Livingston and her son, Robert R. Livingston, Jr., one of the Founding Father of the United States.
Originally built around 1740, Clermont Mansion was burned to the ground in 1777, as punishment for supporting the rebels during the American Revolution.
The home was rebuilt during the Revolution by Martha Livingston and her son, Robert R. Livingston, Jr., who was the one of the Founding Father of the United States. His accomplishments include: drafting the Declaration of Independence, serving as first U.S. Minister of Foreign Affairs, administering the oath of office to George Washington, negotiating the Louisiana Purchase and developing steamboat technology with Robert Fulton.
Seven successive generations of Livingstone’s have occupied the home and left their mark. Today, Clermont appears much as it did in the early 20th century, when it was the home of the property's last two generations. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
Along with the home and four gardens, the site contains a visitor’s center and gift shop. Both the home and gardens offer lovely views of the Hudson River.
