Located only 25 miles north of New York City along the eastern shore of the Hudson River lies the enchanting and legendary village of Sleepy Hollow. It is known around the world as the setting for Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a short story about the local area and its sinister specter, the Headless Horseman. Owing to this story, as well as the village's folklore, Sleepy Hollow is considered by some to be one of the “most haunted places in the world.”

Today, this modern village’s striking blend of natural beauty and urban amenities along with world-renowned historic landmarks attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year. The village’s dining options are wide and varied, including Italian, Greek, Indian, French, Portuguese, Dominican, Ecuadorian, Moroccan and Chilean cuisine - and more. And while at present there is no lodging available in the village of Sleepy Hollow itself, within a few minutes’ drive you can find contemporary and luxury hotels and motels, comfy bed-and-breakfasts and even a real castle to set up your cozy home base.

Riverside parks like Kingsland Point and Horan’s Landing provide easy access for kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing while offering recreational fun like picnicking, ballfields, hiking, fishing and playgrounds. Stretch your legs and take your camera to the vast Rockefeller State Park Preserve, home to hundreds of acres that includes a network of carriage roads traversing woodlands, fields and stream.

A visit to Washington Irving’s charming Sunnyside estate in Tarrytown should not be missed as well as nearby tours to stunning attractions like the 1883 Lighthouse at Sleepy Hollow, Philipsburg Manor and Kyuit, the Rockefeller family’s opulent, 40-room hilltop estate featuring gardens with 20th-century sculptures. And a trip to Sleepy Hollow would not be complete without a visit to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where Washington Irving is laid to rest alongside other famous individuals, including Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, William Rockefeller and Elizabeth Arden.

And, just maybe, you will catch a glimpse of Sleepy Hollow’s most notable celebrity – the Headless Horseman himself!
