Sodus Outer Light is located at the end of the western of the two piers that define the channel from Lake Ontario into Sodus Bay.

The first pier at the entrance was built in 1834 with a beacon on the pier head. A more permanent beacon was erected in 1870 and rebuilt in 1901.

When the old Sodus Lighthouse was deactivated, this lighthouse became the primary lighthouse.
