Historian Ted Panyatoff returns to Oswego to deliver a free presentation about the “Forts of the Endicott Period Coastal Defense System.” The discussion begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 3 in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks at Fort Ontario State Historic Site on East Fourth Street.

Some believed that a British invasion of the U.S. through Canada was a possibility as late as 1897. As a result, plans were drawn up to update the recently abandoned and obsolete Fort Ontario. Mr. Panyatoff will discuss these plans during his talk.

For those requiring assistance to the fort from the parking lot, a golf cart will be available.

Cayuga Lake Triathlon

Cayuga Lake Triathlon (CLT) is organized by the Ithaca Triathlon Club and is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Taughannock Falls State Park, about 8 miles north of Ithaca, provides a picturesque setting for the whole family to enjoy the triathlon, along with public swimming, a playground, shaded picnic areas and hiking trails. Tent, RV and cabin camping is available, and the Park maintains a marina with a boat ramp for access to Cayuga Lake.

Begin the race with a swim in one of the crown jewels of the region, the refreshingly cool waters of Cayuga Lake. You’ll bike along scenic rolling hills with spectacular lake views. You’ll finish with a run near the shore, through the shaded and magnificent gorge trail to Taughannock Falls, the highest water fall in the Northeast at 215 feet.

Races include Intermediate, Sprint, Youth and Kids.

Oswego Paddlefest

This annual event is hosted by the H. Lee White Maritime Museum and invites all kayakers, canoeists, and stand-up paddle boarders to enjoy the unique beauty of the historic Oswego River and Canal by “locking through” four canal locks. There will be two launch points again for this year’s event and both courses will end at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum's boating center in Oswego.

August 14th, 21st, and 28th, Clayton Island Tours is hosting karaoke night with Daniel Anderson upon the St. Lawrence River. The fun doesn't end once you step off the boat, though! After the tour, head on over to O'brien's in downtown Clayton to continue the evening fun. Present your Karaoke Cruise ticket and receive 1/2 off an appetizer!

Clayton Island Tours Boats are non-smoking and no passport will be required for these events. The tour starts at 6:30pm and will last about 2 hours. Make sure you arrive early... Boarding will take place 15 minutes before the boat departs.

The legendary southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd added southern rock great Hank Williams Jr. as a third opening act at the Lakeview Amphitheater this summer along with the Marshall Tucker Band and .38 Special.

Williams performed at the New York State Fair's former grandstand in 2015, and spoke often of his father, the late country icon Hank Williams.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, this will be Lynyrd Skynyrd’s last tour and comes 45 years after their 1973 debut, "Pronounced 'Leh-'nerd 'Skin-'nerd," which included hits "Gimme Three Steps," "Simple Man" and "Free Bird."

There will also be a fashion show illustrating clothing and uniforms of soldiers, officers, women, and children of the 18th century; historian Shari Crawford introduces kids to 18th century toys and games; and living history expert Paul Supley interprets the role of an 18th century physician and surgeon and present a display of reproduction and original 18th century medical tools, equipment, medicines, and treatments.
