Gangstagrass Kicks off the Music Hall New Year

Gangstagrass Kicks off the Music Hall New Year Time: 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Location: McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake St., Oswego, NY, 13126
Email: OCPAoswego@gmail.com
In existence for more than 30 years, the Oswego Music Hall offers mostly acoustical musicians every other Saturday night from September to June. On concert evenings, a large empty hall is transformed into an intimate venue replete with candlelit tables, professional staging and sound; as well as an array of freshly baked desserts, hot cider and freshly brewed coffee.

On Jan. 11, Hip Hop meets Bluegrass with the debut performance of Gangstagrass. Prior to the concert, the public is invited to a “Meet & Greet” reception at 6:30. The wheelchair accessible venue is the McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake Street in Oswego.
“The Brooklyn group brings together rappers and pickers to create music as steeped in Appalachia as it is in beats and lyrical flow. By the end of their set the members of Gangstagrass succeeded in igniting a full-on dance party and showing that the melding of hip-hop and bluegrass can be done proper. Their set featured all the best attributes of both styles of music: top notch musicianship with the occasional jam, lively harmonies, and two MCs at the top of their game dropping rhymes and keeping the crowd fully hyped. In other words, they are an act not to be missed.” ~Glide Magazine, 9/5/17
"Gangstagrass fuses string instruments with hip-hop artists, resulting in arguably the best argument yet for a rap and country music marriage.” ~Rolling Stone Country

“A mixture of bluegrass and hip-hop that might repel some purists on either side of the country-and-rap divide, but will knock the socks off just about everybody else.” ~Wall Street Journal

Concert tickets are $20 ($17 advance sale). Children 16 and under are half price, students are $10, and under 5 free. Purchase tickets at any Saturday concert, on the web or at the river’s end bookstore, 19 West Bridge Street in Oswego. Find more information online at https://www.oswegomusichall.org and for a complete performance schedule visit the website.

The Music Hall is a non-profit organization that has been run entirely by volunteers from its inception in 1978. From Bach to rock, flamenco infernos to tribal hymns, Taimane lights up the stage like no other.

Since setting her sights beyond the Hawaii horizon in 2017, Taimane has wowed ever larger audiences including performances alongside Michael Franti to over 10,000 people at both Red Rocks and The Gorge Amphitheatres and her own show in front of 20,000 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. At SXSW 2019 in Austin, TX, Taimane’s rise hit high speed with NPR and other media hailing her as one of the standout artists of the mega festival. She continued to soar thereafter garnering the spotlight from Reuters News Agency, experiencing an explosion of new fans around the globe (over 250,000 online followers and counting), packing venues across Europe and selling out all five of her summer concerts in North America. 2020 looks on-track to further propel Taimane as she kicks off the year performing at one of the most acclaimed venues in Germany, the 2,200-seat “Elbphilharmonie,” records an episode of NPR’s Tiny Desk series, returns to SXSW and sees a taping of her sold out 2019 Berkeley concert broadcast on select PBS television stations nationwide.

This is a wheelchair accessible venue.

On January 25, Matt Nakoa takes to the National Stage at the Oswego Music Hall at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Nakoa grew up on a small goat farm in Smyrna, NY and began composing music as a teenager. Following a formative stint as a classical pianist, Matt won a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Matt has earned many songwriting awards, including a win at Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk Competition. Additionally, Matt’s piano music has received favorable reviews in publications including The New York Times, and his film scoring has been featured by Disney. Matt now tours internationally, recently performing at The White House, throughout India, and regularly with folk music icon Tom Rush.

The Music Hall is a non-profit organization that has been run entirely by volunteers from its inception in 1978. Volunteers can earn admission to shows through various tasks— from running the sound board to making popcorn. Students can also earn credit for community service. Concerts are made possible in part with funding by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
