Nestled among the vineyards of Northern Chautauqua County on Lake Erie, the village of Fredonia has a long and unique history full of “firsts.”
Welcome to Fredonia ! Nestled among the vineyards of Northern Chautauqua County on Lake Erie, the village of Fredonia has a long and unique history full of “firsts” – not just within New York, but within the nation. Incorporated in 1829, Fredonia is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter.
A veteran village of “firsts,” Fredonia was the site of the first natural gas well in the world and was the first village to be illuminated by natural gas lighting in 1825. In 1868, Fredonia became the home of the first dues-paying Grange of the Grange movement and, in 1873, was the birthplace of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Fredonia is also the site of the first home for aged persons in the State of New York, The Women’s Christian Association (WCA) home.
This quaint Victorian village boasts unique downtown shops, a state university, historic inns and B&Bs and many annual festivals. It is also home to the elaborate 1891 Fredonia Opera House, a former vaudeville theater that now serves as a year-round performing arts center. The Rockefeller Arts Center at the State University of Fredonia Campus, is a major cultural center for western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania and houses a 1,200-seat concert hall, three theaters and two art galleries.
Let Fredonia be your hub as you explore the delightfully delicious 50 miles of vineyards in Lake Erie Wine Country, tour the landmark and operational Dunkirk Lighthouse and Veterans Museum with an onsite maritime museum and picturesque lake views or camp, hike, swim ad play at Lake Erie State Park, both just a short 10-minute drive.
Another Fredonia claim to fame is Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, who had family from Fredonia. Visit famed Chautauqua County for more informaiton on these and other fantastic attractions.
