Watertown is situated approximately 20 miles south of the Thousand Islands, and 70 miles north of Syracuse, NY. The Black River, which actually flows right through the city, is a world-renowned kayaking destination.

Named after the many falls located on the Black River, Watertown boasts a strong industrial legacy and, from years of generating industrial wealth, the city was said to have more millionaires per capita in the early 20th century than any other city in the nation. Known as the birthplace of the “Five and Dime” and the safety pin, Watertown also manufactured the first portable steam engine and has the longest continually operating county fair in the United States.

Watertown is also home to a "haunted museum," and a small, but cozy zoo that features and teaches about animals indigenous to New York State, such as bear, otters and wolverines and Thompson Park, which offers a variety of activities year round.
