Rome NY, an Erie Canal Town
Rome was the groundbreaking site for the engineering marvel known as the Erie Canal
Due to its strategic location, the historic city of Rome was considered one of the most important transportation points for people and goods along the Great Passage during the settling and founding of the American nation in the 1700s and 1800s.
Rome’s Fort Stanwix, constructed in 1758, was an important and vital military post during the American Revolution and during the Industrial Revolution, Rome earned its name of the “Copper City” as its metal industries produced an estimated 10 percent of all copper in the U.S.
Rome was also the site of the groundbreaking for the engineering marvel known as the Erie Canal, constructed to bridge the gap between waterways and opening up the country to the American West.
Some notable names and remarkable patriots were also Romans, including Francis Bellamy, most famous for authoring the “Pledge of Allegiance,” and Alex Haley, the author of “Roots.”
