Palmyra is 'Queen of the Canal Towns'
Steeped in history and the Erie Canal, Palmyra boasts five museums and was an important part of the Underground Railroad.
Once dubbed the "Queen of the Canal Towns," Palmyra is made up of both a town and a village. The town of Palmyra was birthed in 1789, became an important hub for the Underground Railroad by the late 1850's, and by 1900 had become a thriving industrial center. As part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, Palmyra features the Erie Canal and Lock 29, and is located approximately 20 miles southeast of the stimulating metropolis of Rochester.
The village is the site of the first publication of the Book of Mormon and also claims to be the only town in the county that has the unique feature of having four churches at a four corner intersection facing each other!
Steeped in history, Palmyra boasts five fascinating museums worth visiting. The museums include the Erie Canal Depot, the William Phelps General Store and Museum, the Alling Coverlet Museum, the Print Shop Museum and the renowned Palmyra Historical Museum.
Join in the family fun and festivities at the annual Palmyra Pirate Weekend in August which features the 'pirates of the Erie Canal,' the Canaltown Days Weekend in September, and seasonal walking tours highlighting the Underground Railway stops.
