Situated in the middle of one of the most active flight lanes in the Atlantic Flyway, the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge is located at the north end of Cayuga Lake and is located only 35 miles west of Syracuse and 45 miles east of Rochester. Established in 1938 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife, the 9,809-acre refuge today provides resting, feeding, and nesting habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds.
Montezuma Wildlife Refuge has year-round activities for the whole famiily including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, environmental education, interpretation and photography. The Esker Brook, which includes the Orchard, Brook and Ridge trails, and South Spring Pool walking trails offer nearly 4 miles of easy to moderate terrain for hikers.
There is also a Gift Shop and The Visitor Center contains exhibits, leaflets and brochures, live-action feed from an osprey nest-cam and a purple martin nest-cam, as well as restrooms. The Visitor Center’s lower viewing deck is equipped with a telescope to enhance your wildlife viewing. The visitor center and most of the paved trail at the Castle are accessible to wheelchairs. The whole trail at Montezuma Well, and a portion of the Castle trail are too steep for wheelchairs.
