It's "All Aboard!” for a fun-filled Day of Rail Biking & Nature

posted by Deb Denny at 2019-07-13 06:00:00

Rail biking is the newest adventure – and growing in popularity across the country and around the world! Upstate New York has embraced this unique and exciting way to explore its natural beauty and see what the trains see – but slower and more up close and personal. Hear the sounds of nature, spot the elusive bird or scuttling critters in their habitat. An autumn trip adds to the wonder as the landscape explodes with the vibrant colors of the season.

Rail bike tours generally travel about 6-8 miles, typically take about two hours and are accessible for nearly all ages and ability levels – and are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace and with a camera! Upstate NY currently boasts two rail bike tours, one at Thendora Station in the Adirondacks and the other at North Creek in the Catskills.

These pedal-powered vehicles glide on railroad tracks as you pedal with ease through scenic woodscapes, alongside creeks and rivers, over bridges above glistening waterways and through charming towns. They are safe, well-designed and easy to use for all ages. Some tours offer a tandem for two people or quads for up to four people – or both. And some even let you bring your pooch!

So, if you are looking for a new and one-of-a-kind adventure to experience this summer, why not consider rail-biking?

“Pedal powered rail vehicles date back to at least the 1850’s, when maintenance workers used hand-cars and ‘rail bikes’ to travel along the tracks. They were used to transport crew and materials for track inspection and repairs. Today, there are a variety of designs in use around the world: the ‘Draisine’ of Europe; ‘rail bikes’ with aluminum frames and rubber wheels; and modified road bikes with an outrigger wheel.” – Rail Explorers USA

Rail bikes were also used by forest patrols to access points on the railroad near fires.
