Raft or Tube the Black River with Whitewater Challengers

posted by Teresa Farrell at 2024-08-05 21:46:00

This summer, take advantage of the warm temperatures and get out on the water for a whitewater rafting or tubing trip down the Black River with Whitewater Challenges, located in Dexter, New York (near Watertown), in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York.

With more than 30 years of experiencing running rafting trips down the Black River, Whitewater Challengers prides themselves on offering a world-class rafting experience accessible to folks as young as 13 withor without prior rafting experience. Every trip is led by a New York State licensed whitewater guide, and all equipment is included; the only requirements for joining the trip are that you can walk down stairs and on uneven ground to reach the river.

An excursion with Whitewater Challengers on the Black River offers Class III/IV rapids, with the highest water levels and
biggest thrills and adrenaline rushes in May and June, and a more mellow experience July through October. The trip takes two and half to three hours, depending on water levels, and winds through the Black River Canyon, where unique geography creates vertical rock walls and waterfalls that make it seem like you’re a world away from anything you’ve experienced before. The trip route allows you to navigate through 14 sets of rapids, ranging from “mild to wild,” and take in the beauty of the surrounding scenery as you go.

Snacks and beverages are provided on the trip, and with a rest break to enjoy them and the outfitting process and shuttle ride included, the entire experience clocks in at about a five-hour excursion, perfect for a day trip or fun way to spend a day of your vacation in the area. When you’re done, you can purchase a photo of your trip, taken along the way to capture the exhilaration of the experience. Special rates are available for group trips as well, though arrangements must be made in advance.
If whitewater rafting isn't your thing, or if you have kids under the age of 13 but over the age of seven with you, take advantage of a new activity Whitewater Challengers is now offering: lazy river tubing.  A motorized raft will tow you to the launch spot, and the gentle current will bring you back over the course of about two and a half hours.

This is a perfect way to spend a relaxing day taking in the beautiful scenery and calm water of the lower canyon as you float along with family and friends; you can even bring a cooler and rent a float to carry it with you as you go. With shuttle time included, the trip is about three and a half hours total, and also requires zero previous experience, just the ability to walk down stairs and on uneven ground.
