Holiday Lights 2022: Capital-Saratoga Region, Hudson Valley, Catskills and Adirondacks

posted by Teresa Farrell at 2022-12-12 15:47:00

The holidays are almost here, which means towns across Upstate New York are bringing out the decorations for their annual holiday light displays. Check out some highlights of light displays throughout the Capital-Saratoga Region, the Hudson Valley, the Catskills and the Adirondacks for 2022.

In the Capital Region, Capital Holiday Lights in the Park has gone virtual this year after ending a 25-year stint in Albany’s Washington Park. There are plans to come back with an in-person event at the Altamont Fairgrounds in 2023, but for now, visit the CapitalHoliday Light Show website to watch a nostalgic video of previous years’ displays. If you want to see som lights in person, head up to Round Lake, near Saratoga, to drive through the Santa’s Playland light display put on by Quick Response; or check out Holiday Lighted Nights at the Washington County Fairgrounds, where you can drive or take a wagon ride through the fairgrounds to see the displays.

In the Adirondack vacation town of Lake George, holiday displays will be lighting up the town’s Shepard
Park through the end of December. In addition to the chance to stroll through more than 20 displays of lights in the park, the storefronts along Canada Street will be decorated for the season. Head a bit further west to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake for Wild Lights, a walk-through display of decorated, lit trees on the grounds of the Wild Center and on the Wild Walk, the museum’s “boardwalk” that winds through the treetops.

To the south, in the Catskills, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is back with their Peace, Love and Lights drive-through show that puts a groovy spin on the traditional holiday lights. This year, drive the nearly two-mile path through the dazzling light displays with themes of New York; Holidays Around The World; Snowflake Alley; Christmas; Candy Cane Lane; the Enchanted Forest; and Groovy Way. Also, check out A Frosty Fest in Ulster Park, which features a variety of different themed light displays to walk or drive through.

The Hudson Valley has plenty of light displays to see as well. Wonderland of Lights, held at the Duchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, and Westchester’s Winter Wonderland in Valhalla are favorites to drive through. If you’d like to set out on foot, check out LUMAGICA: An Enchanted Forest in New York at Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard in New Salem, or Holiday Lights in Bloom at the Orange County Arboretum in Hamptonburgh.

Of course, before you head out, make sure that you check the hours, reservation information, and ticket prices for these light shows—some are free and open daily, others require tickets purchased either ahead of time or on site, and several are open only during certain days and hours. Once you’ve got the details down, bundle up, grab a thermos of hot cocoa, and enjoy the bright lights of the season!
