Enjoy a Cozy Getaway in Glens Falls, America's 'Hometown USA'

posted by Teresa Farrell at 2019-09-14 22:13:00

Located between the Capital Region and the Adirondacks, the city of Glens Falls is filled with things to see and do at any time of the year. But fall is an especially fun time to visit, thanks to the area’s beautiful natural surroundings, which make it a great spot to soak up the changing colors of the countryside, as well as the bounty of events and activities to partake in.

In 1944, Look Magazine dubbed Glens Falls “Hometown USA,” and that sentiment still rings true today. This place offers the amenities of a city with the charming feel of a smaller town. Fall is filled with opportunities to attend a haunted event or the annual Adirondack Balloon Festival, go apple or pumpkin picking, wind your way through a corn maze, or just explore the surrounding countryside and take in the beautiful fall foliage at one of the many parks, trails and recreation areas nearby.

Of course, fall fun isn’t the only kind of fun to be found here. When you’re ready to wind down a bit, soak up what sun the season has to offer with a craft beverage on a patio at one of the many breweries, wineries and distilleries to discover throughout the area. Of course, there are also plenty of places to grab a bite to eat, whether you’re looking for sweet treats, casual fare or something more upscale.

Burn off any over-indulgence with a walk around downtown to visit the shops or a visit to a museum or historic site; with a strong arts and culture scene, Glens Falls is home to variety them. One of the best known is the Hyde Collection, where fine art from around the world is on display in a historic home. The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council is home to exhibits interpreting the arts and culture of the lower Adirondack region, while the Chapman Museum focuses on the history of the city and surrounding area. Kids will love the World Awareness Children’s Museum, filled with interactive exhibits and featuring multicultural programs and events.

There’s also a thriving arts scene to be found downtown; catch concerts and performances at the Park Theater, the Charles L. Wood Theater, and the Cool Insuring Area (formerly known as the Glens Falls Civic Center). Glens Falls even has its very own symphony orchestra. If you’re not ready to get back to your hotel yet, spend some time enjoying the city’s nightlife at one of the many bars, pubs and clubs in town. And once you’re all tired out, there’s a variety of places to get some rest, from upscale hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts to campgrounds and RV parks on the outskirts of town for those who aren’t quite ready to let go of summertime and sleeping under the stars.

Whether you’ve been here before or it’s your first time visiting, make sure to plan a weekend away in Hometown USA this fall and exploring all this charming city has to offer.
