Hailed as the cradle of America’s first artistic movement, the Great Northern Catskills is the birthplace of ideas and cultural currents that celebrate and honor the region's unique place in history. In fact, the early 19th century scenic views and striking sceneries inspired a new genre of American art called the Hudson River School, founded by landscape artist Thomas Cole. Greene County boasts five of the 10 highest Catskill Peaks in the Catskill State Park with hiking trails ideal for birding and wildlife viewing. Most of the park’s trails can accommodate family cyclists and adventurist mountain bikers as well as snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Not far away, Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing for all levels of ability.
