Well known for its historic significance, Cayuga County is home to the likes of Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States; William H. Seward, Secretary of State for Abraham Lincoln and the leading figure in the purchase of Alaska, then known as “Seward’s Folly; famous abolitionist Harriet Tubman; and Theodore Willard Case, one of the first to pioneer talking movies. While the Finger Lakes is world-renowned for its wine, Cayuga County can boast having the first organized and now longest-running wine trail in the country – the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. History lovers will also marvel at the Tiffany-designed stained glass in the Willard Memorial Chapel and can see where Harriet Tubman settled after her numerous trips on the Underground Railroad rescuing family members and slaves.
Along with the amazing wealth of American history and excellent wine, Cayuga County also provides plenty of fun and family-friendly things to do. Enjoy an exciting baseball game at Falcon Park in Auburn or the annual Renaissance Festival in Fair Haven or take in the dirt track racing action in Weedsport then take part in the action yourself at Auburn’s motocross park. Visitors are also invited to explore the exploding craft beverage scene, tour wineries to sample award- winning wines, enjoy live comedy acts, film, dance and concerts at first-class arts and cultural institutions, including the REV Theatre Company, also dubbed Broadway in the Finger Lakes.
With three state parks, well-groomed trails, nature preserves and three state forests, there is an abundance of outdoor recreational activities including hiking, biking, fishing and even scuba diving along with fun winter activities in the snow. Or follow the historic canal towpath of the Erie Canal on the Erie Canal Recreational Trail while you hike, bike, horseback ride, cross-country ski or snowmobile your way through history.
