Bisecting the town and village across the center is the Esopus Creek, considered to be the birthplace of “American Fly Fishing” and the creek is also popular for tubing. Saugerties boasts a beach, a 150-acres animal sanctuary and Falling Water Preserve, riverfront, day-use park with trails, grassy fields, a waterfall and the interesting remains of an old icehouse.
A visit to Saugerties brings you farmer’s markets, antique shops, world-class horse shows, hiking, fly-fishing, delicious dining and local festivals like the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival. While there, you won’t want to miss visiting Opus 40, a monumental bluestone earth sculpture by Harvey Fite, or the restored and secluded Saugerties Lighthouse. Accessible by a pleasant half-mile walk through the woods or by boat, the historic lighthouse also offers two room for rent.
