White Plains - "The Birthplace of the State of New York" boasts Westchester's largest walkable downtown center and is known as a "destination shopping district"
Dubbed the “Birthplace of the State of New York,” White Plains is only 27 miles north of Manhattan and boasts Westchester's largest walkable downtown center featuring numerous shops and restaurants as well as playing host to events throughout the year.
Influenced by its proximity to New York City, White Plains' downtown area turned into a "destination" shopping district following World War II, becoming home to branch stores of many famous New York-based department and specialty stores. While here, history can be discovered at the White Plains Armory, a monument commemorating the first public reading in New York of the Declaration of Independence, or the Jacob Purdy House, a circa-1720 farmhouse that was used during the Revolutionary War by General George Washington as a headquarters command post.

The Declaration not only declared the colony's independence, but also marked the formation of the State of New York, giving White Plains the corresponding nickname, “The Birthplace of New York.”
