Located in the northwest corner of Schenectady, on the banks of the Mohawk River, the city’s Stockade Historic District is the oldest neighborhood in the city and one of the oldest in the entire country. Settled in 1661 by a group of enterprising Dutch merchants and fur-traders, it is the first Historic District established in New York.

This historic district is home to what the National Parks Service called district has the highest concentration of historic period homes in the country – more than 40 pre-Revolutionary War houses – along with elegant and ancient churches and what has been called the most beautiful riverside park in America.

Take a relaxing walking tour of the Stockade and be prepared to feel the remnants of its history and amazed by its beauty, including the lovely Riverside Park along the Mohawk River. This neighborhood is home to a 195-year-old inn, a charming bed and breakfast and a cozy coffee house with entertainment. You can also walk to historic Union College and its colorful Jackson Gardens or you walk or bike the Erie Canal-way trail.

The district’s Stockade Association also hosts an historic jazz club, where great performers like Earl Hines, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk have performed and is also within walking distance to Schenectady’s vibrant downtown with shops, restaurants and nightlife and Broadway at Proctors Theater, recognized as one of the premier historic theaters in America.
