The Thomas Cole National Historic Site is the first stop on the Hudson River Art Trail, which includes more than 20 sites in New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Wyoming, showcasing the vistas captured by Hudson River School of Art painters.

This historic site offers magnificent examples of the style or “school” of art that Thomas Cole began in 1825, now known as the Hudson River School. Cole is known as the father of America's first distinctive artistic style.

Visitors can receive a guided tour through Thomas Cole’s 1815 home and charming Old Studio, which holds Cole’s original paint brushes, pencil case, tools for grinding and mixing paints, sketching chair and two giant easels, and hear the remarkable stories about the artist’s life and career.

The museum shop is housed in the 1839 building that was used as a storehouse for the farm and today is stocked with unique gifts and books about art and the Hudson Valley region, as well as our own publications.
