The renowned author of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson stayed in this cottage during the winter of 1887-88, hoping to recover from tuberculosis. During his stay, he wrote The Master of Ballentrae: A Winter's Tale, which was published in 1889, and several essays for Scribner's magazine.
 

Established in 1915, the quaint farmhouse where he lived now contains the world's first and largest collection of Robert Louis Stevenson memorabilia, including his original furniture, early photographs, personal letters and his velvet smoking jacket.
