Located on the boundary of southern Jefferson County and northern Oswego County in Upstate New York, Winona Forest is a 9,233-acre state forest that offers diverse opportunities for year-round recreational fun that includes snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, trapping, dog sledding, birdwatching and horseback riding.

From challenging competitions to simple recreational pleasure, its well-maintained multi-use trails, miles of logging roads, jeep trails, foot trails, abandoned highways and frozen streambeds attract both local people and visitors from all over to spend some time in this enchanting forest.

While Winona Forest, located in the Tug Hill area, offers amazing adventures all year, it is in the winter when it is really able to show its stuff. When the prevailing westerly winds move cold winter air over the warm water of Lake Ontario, massive lake effect snow is produced, giving the forest and Tug area the highest average annual snowfall of any area in the U.S. east of the Rockies – between 200 and 300+ inches!
