Oswego W. Pierhead Lighthouse
Located at the end of the western breakwater in Oswego harbor, the West Pierhead Lighthouse is still active today
Located at the end of the western breakwater forming the harbor in Oswego, the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse is the fourth lighthouse since 1822 to stand watch over the mouth of the Oswego River. Fabricated in 1934, it is a metal lighthouse, designed to withstand the high winds, heavy surf and destructive ice common to Lake Ontario. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the lighthouse still serves as an active aid to navigation for Lake Ontario sailors.
The West Pierhead Lighthouse originally boast a fourth-order Fresnel lens in the lantern room until the lighthouse was automated in 1969. The Fresnel lens is currently on display in the H. Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego. Today, the museum, in partnership with the City of Oswego, serve as the stewards of the iconic and historic station.
Each year, from June through September, the maritime museum offers guests an enjoyable and scenic boat ride tours to the restored lighthouse, which includes access inside. This unique experience has become very popular with both residents and tourists alike.
