Canastota, on the Historic Erie Canal
Historic Canastota produced two world boxing champions and is home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame
The historic village of Canastota was originally settled in 1810, evolving into a vibrant Canal town. Today, a revitalized portion of the Canal still exists, running through the central portion of this Erie Canal community.
Across the street from the Canal is the Canal Town Museum, dedicated to preserving and describing Canastota’s part in the infrastructural wonder known as the Erie Canal. Wandering through this historic town, you will appreciate the many Victorian-style homes from the active Canal period that still exist as well as Greystone Castle, originally built in 1909 as a church and today opens its doors for upscale banquets and fairytale weddings.
Canastota’s most prominent claim to fame, however, is its ties to the sport of boxing, having produced two world boxing champions and it is home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Just to the north of the village is Sylvan Beach Amusement Park and Verona Beach State Park, where fishing, camping, boating and fun on the beach are available throughout the summer. Located at exit 34 of the New York State Thruway, Canastota also provides easy access exciting places like Syracuse and the Turning Stone Casino.
