The town of Henderson is home to a unique memorial for our nation’s veterans. The Alexander Corners Veterans and Pearl Harbor Memorial is part history exhibit, part memorial in honor of members of the armed services, and part quiet spot to slow down, relax, and take in a peaceful environment. The 8.45-acre property the park is situated on is the site of the Oliver Bates Farm, the first historic site in the town to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The memorial park was created by Gary Rhodes, his wife Jolene, and their son Jonathan. Completed in 2004, it’s situated alongside their home and businesses, Rhodes Greenhouses and Garden Center, at the Oliver Bates Farm site. The family considers it their way of saying thank you to our country’s veterans and military members and their families, as well as police and firefighters.

The memorial area is landscaped with flowers and features a Cobra Attack Helicopter and a M60A3 Main Battle Tank, both from nearby Fort Drum, on display, as well as two 16-inch shells from the USS New Jersey battleship. There’s also a building on site with a room for military items the family has collected or been gifted by others. The park is also home to memorial stones for three veterans from various points in American history. The most recent addition to the space is a memorial rock garden where kids can pick up pebbles and rocks for their collections.

The memorial is open during the hours the greenhouse is open; typically, that means seven days a week from May to October from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but visit rhodesgreenhouses.com for the most recent hours, as they may change. The memorial is also open on Veterans Day each year.
